HEIDELBERG castle tour, 4h
Heidelberg is a pedestrian-friendly city-especially in the Altstadt, or Old Town, where your explorations are likely to begin. The Altstadt is a long, narrow strip of medieval cityscape on the south bank of the Neckar River. Most sights are within a block or two of the Hauptstrasse or Main Street, which runs-with an occasional name change-from the department stores of the Bismarkplatz to the Karlstor at the eastern end of town.
STRASBOURG bus & walking tour, 4h
Strasbourg is considered the daughter of the Rhine River. It is famous for its history, cathedrals, architecture and gastronomy. In this walking tour you will discover interesting historical sights. Petite France is an area on the Grand Île, called the Venice of the North because of its narrow streets and canals. It is a delightful area to visit and it takes you back to Medieval Strasbourg. One destination that should be on your “must see” list is the Place Gutenberg which lies in the center of medieval Strasbourg, not far from the Cathedral.
COLOGNE walking tour, 2h
With a history of almost 2000 years, Cologne (Köln) is one of the largest and oldest metropolitan cities of Germany. You will be awestruck by the majestic cathedral, the Cologne Dom, one of the largest in Europe and the most important landmark of Cologne. The physical appearance of modern Cologne belies its ancient heritage. Allied bombing during World War II destroyed some 90 percent of the town; therefore, much of what you see was rebuilt in the 1950s and 1960s. Our expert guide will give you a tour of the city and relate to you the history and sights of Cologne’s storied past dating back to the first century B.C. when the Romans founded Colonia Agrippensis.
KOBLENZ walking tour. 2h30 (optional).
Koblenz is very happily situated at the meeting point of the Rhine and Moselle Rivers, surrounded by four low hills. The town is 2,000 years old, founded by the Romans around a castle in the year 9 BC. Since then a series of invading armies and royalty – Prussians, French, Germans, Franks - have claimed Koblenz and built fortresses and castles galore. It also boasts a town center of cozy lanes and narrow alleys, historic buildings and cultural monuments. If it`s history, fairytales and beauty you want, Koblenz may well be what you`re looking for. The section of the Rhine between Koblenz and Mainz offers vistas of steep vineyard-covered mountains punctuated by scores of castles. It’s really rather magical.
COLMAR bus tour (optional), 5h
The self-proclaimed capital of the Alsace wine region, Colmar is an undeniable highlight of the famous Alsace Wine Route and renowned for its beautifully preserved medieval center. Colmar is postcard-worthy from all angles, with its half-timbered buildings painted in a rainbow of colors, fishing boats bobbing along the flower-lined canal ways and maze of cobblestone lanes dotted with small cafés and artisan shops.
SPEYER walking tour, 1h30 (optional).
Speyer is home to a 10th century Cathedral, which holds the title for being the biggest preserved Romanesque Church in the world. Stroll through the streets of this quaint town, lined with boutiques, galleries, coffee shops and restaurants. Cross the 18th century stone bridge, which links the Old Town to the Philosopher’s Walk and enjoy the picturesque views of the city stretched along the Nekar River.
MAINZ walking tour, 2h (optional).
In this city tour the participants follow the trail of the Romans and the Celts in one of the oldest cities in Germany. Mainz offers a variety of historical and cultural experiences, including Mainz Cathedral – a house of God, which is, by the size and history, one of the landmarks of the city. Unique in Germany are the windows of St. Stephen`s Church, which sit high above Mainz and received their notoriety through the window of the artist Marc Chagall.
RUDESHEIM walking tour + wine tasting, 2h (optional). Rüdesheim is a historic city of winegrowers. Already the Romans grew wine here. The old town, dating from the Middle Ages, and parts of the city`s fortifications like the Adlerturm (eagle tower) are maintained. Here you will find cosy traditional wine taverns in historic half-timbered houses. No tourist leaves this international well-known city without visiting the world-famous Drosselgasse. The Drosselgasse is the heart of Rüdesheim`s old town, a “magnet” for tourists from all continents. Live band entertainment, brass instrument and dance music from late morning till midnight along the 144 m long Drosselgasse.
BONN walking tour, 1h30 (optional).
When this friendly, relaxed city on the Rhine became West Germany`s ‘temporary’ capital in 1949 it surprised many, including its own residents. When in 1991 a reunited German government decided to move back to Berlin, it shocked many, especially its own residents. More than 15 years later, no-one need feel sorry for Bonn. Change brings opportunity, and rather than plunge into the dark depths of provincialism, the ex-capital has reinvented itself with creativity and vigor.
